5 Ways to Show Your Team You Genuinely Care

1. Take notes
There are few better ways to show your team that their opinions matter than by taking notes on what they say in meetings. Doing so lets them know that you are actively listening, and value their feedback enough to make a record of it. The major added benefit of taking notes is that you can reference them in future meetings. “Hey Jason, in our meeting two weeks ago, you said that your goal was to increase your production by 10%. How are you progressing with this goal?”

2. Put away your phone
When meeting with your team, it is important to eliminate all distractions and focus 100% of your attention on the person or people in front of you. This means, above all, get rid of your phone! Put it on silent and keep it in your pocket. Get it off the table in front of you altogether. Even quick checks of your Twitter feed or a speedy text message can indicate to your people that you aren’t completely present. If you’re expecting an important call or email, the best thing to do is warn your team in advance that you will have to answer your phone or check your email at a particular time.

3. Invest your time into the relationship
Easily the best way to show your team that you genuinely care is to invest time into your relationships. Just 30 minutes a week can go a long, long way. Whether you grab a coffee in the morning together, or a beer after work, any one-on-one time can be beneficial. Be sure to follow tip #2 about keeping your phone away and being completely mentally present. Time outside the office shows your people that you are genuinely interested in strengthening the relationship and learning more about them.

4. Know and understand their goals
Here’s a quick reality check for you: Think about each person on your team. Off the top of your head, do you know what motivates each person? This is a fantastic way to show your people that you care about them. Take this to the next level by reminding them about their big picture goals when they need a boost in morale.

5. Celebrate them!
Nothing makes someone feel special like recognition. If someone on your team earns a promotion, overcomes a tricky obstacle, or goes above and beyond, there are so many small things that you can do that will go a long way. Start simple with a pat on the back and by saying “great job!”, or amp it up by doing so publicly in front of the rest of the team or company.
